By Lizzie PernaMoncton police have received a flood of emails and phone calls after the city began testing paper bags to determine if they are “a viable solution to paper bags.”
According to Monctons spokesperson, Sgt. Steve Rennell, Monctont Police have tested paper bags and found them to be “safe.”
“I think there are a number of things that are being addressed here.
There are a lot of people that have expressed interest in using paper bags.
I think it’s very important to do this in a safe way,” Rennett said.”
I’m sure there are people who are going to be disappointed in this decision, but I think the public can be assured that we’re doing the right thing and this is the way we’re going to do it,” he said.
According to Rennella, MonCTons paper bag is being tested at three locations in the city, including in the west end, the south end and the north end.
“The first time I saw the test results I was very impressed.
It looked very safe,” said resident Stephanie Kostesky.”
What we’ve seen in the past is that it is not the easiest test.
It’s very difficult to get into a position where you know what you’re getting into and it’s not that easy to get out.
It can be very dangerous.””
The tests are not a one-size-fits-all, and it really depends on the bag, how much paper you have, how well it’s being handled,” she added.
The test results were released by the Monctonto Police Service, which said they will be sent to the province.
“It’s going to take about one to two weeks for our department to determine what the best course of action is going forward,” Rynnell said.
The paper bag testing is the latest step in a long-term project to study how paper bags could be used in the future.
The project began in 2012 with the idea that paper bags can be reused and recycled.
Monctmont’s paper bags were last inspected in the spring of 2016.
“We’re not trying to get rid of paper bags, we’re just trying to figure out what the long-run impacts of paper bag use are,” Rlynnell added.
“A lot of times, people think paper bags are only going to last a couple of years.
But what we see is that people really use paper bags for years and years.”
People are really happy with their paper bags because they can throw them in the recycling and get rid a lot quicker than they would with other types of bags,” he added.
According the city’s website, paper bags cost about $15 to $20 a bag, and can be used as a makeshift backpack or as a desk, laptop or desk monitor.
